Volvo EX90 Starts at $76,995

Volvo is in the process of going all-electric. That means a new flagship — a top-of-the-line vehicle with every technology and luxury Volvo knows how to build, but one costs you on your monthly electric bill, not at the gas station.

The 2025 Volvo EX90 will come in eight trim levels, two of which squeeze in under the $80,000 line. That’s significant because, since it’s built in North America (South Carolina, to be specific), it might help the EX90 qualify for up to $7,500 in federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credits.

We’re not certain it will qualify for the discount at first. The government is still in the process of finalizing regulations that will control which cars qualify next year. But SUVs over $80,000 are ineligible, so some versions of the EX90 are in the running.

High-Tech With Personality

Many automakers have more or less caught up to Volvo’s vaunted reputation for safety technology in recent years. The EX90 could change that. It’s a showcase of new safety tech. It uses 16 ultrasonic sensors, five radars, and a lidar system to map the area around it so the car’s systems watch traffic even the driver can’t. Volvo says it sees objects 250 meters (about 820 feet) ahead of it in complete darkness.

It watches inside, too. “Special sensors and cameras, powered by our own in-house developed algorithms, gauge eye gaze concentration,” Volvo says. “The technology allows the EX90 to see when you’re distracted, tired, or otherwise inattentive, beyond what has been possible in a Volvo car to date.” A rear-seat reminder system can detect the movements of a baby sleeping under a blanket.

But it’s not just a safety showcase. The EX90 has personality — its headlights even blink like eyes to greet you as you approach it.

The EX90 will be offered with two powertrain choices. Both use the same 111-kilowatt-hour battery.

The twin-motor setup gives you 402 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque. The twin-motor performance version makes 496 horsepower and 671 lb-ft of torque. Each is offered with a seating configuration for six or seven.
