Recall Alert: Ford Escape, Maverick; Lincoln Corsair

Ford and its Lincoln luxury division have issued a recall for 8,727 compact pickups and SUVs because they can lose drive power unexpectedly.

Recalled models include the:

Ford blames software. The company says software can cause transmissions to enter Park as the cars coast to a stop. “When this event occurs, the vehicle will go into neutral, the gear shift indicator light will flash ‘Drive’ and the instrument panel will display ‘Neutral.’” The vehicle will not accelerate.

If the driver shifts the car back into Drive mode, it “will enter a limp home mode which provides limited torque at low speeds up to 30 mph.”

Dealers will fix the problem with a software update. By law, dealers never charge for recall repairs.

Many cars are recalled to fix safety defects, sometimes more than once. While automakers try to reach every owner to ask them to bring the vehicle in for repair, they rarely reach all of them. Millions of vehicles on American roads need free recall repairs. To find out if your car is one of them, check the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
