Quick Facts About Hybrids
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) are like more traditional hybrids (such as the Toyota Prius) in that their powertrain is a combination of a battery-fed electric motor and an internal combustion engine (ICE). However, unlike traditional hybrids (HEVs), a plug-in hybrid’s electric motor actually powers the drive wheels for modest distances by itself. In a typical HEV, the electric motor most often labors in more of a supportive role. For example, helping the ICE to accelerate and to assume some of the load of other electrical functions, like the air conditioning.
Many hybrids can drive the wheels for very short distances at low speeds, like going down a driveway. A PHEV brings no such limitations. Its electric motor takes full charge of the drive wheels until its battery fully discharges. The question then is, how far (range) can a PHEV travel on electric power alone? Charting Plug-in Hybrid Range
We’ve broken out the various 2024 PHEV models by size and category. We provide each vehicle’s electric-only range and their total combined electric and ICE range. Where we don’t have actual range numbers from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we provide the manufacturer’s estimate (Mfg) or indicate the number is coming.
PRO TIP: Remember, whether it’s the EPA’s or the manufacturer’s number, these are estimates often based on ideal conditions and consistent driving behavior. Your personal experience will probably be different.
