The mid-1970s were the true golden era for large cars, with the Buick Riviera and Electra, Lincoln Continental, Dodge Charger and Polara, Ford LTD and Thunderbird, Plymouth Gran Fury, Chevrolet Impala, OIdsmobile 98, and a host of others all well over 200 inches long. The rulers of the roost, however, were the 1974-1976 Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Sedan and Limousine, the longest regular production cars ever produced at 252.2 inches long — that’s more than two feet longer than the longest SUV available in America today, but still about 14 inches short of today’s longest crew cab pickup trucks. That era ended with a global oil crisis that caused gas prices to skyrocket.
Today, SUVs are nearly as long as the mega-sedans of yesteryear. Still, they’re about twice as efficient despite being considerably taller, more powerful, and available with 4-wheel or all-wheel drive. In automotive terms, a lot has changed in the intervening half-century — and that’s not counting all the technology, safety, and feature upgrades that have evolved over the same period. Fun fact: Adjusted to 2024 dollars, the price of gasoline was around $3.31 per gallon at the peak of the 1970s fuel crisis; today’s average gas price in the United States (as of publish date) is about $3.60.
If you’re looking for a large SUV, it’s on this list, as we’ve compiled every SUV beyond 200 inches in overall length. We’ve also included the cargo space available behind the first row as another point of comparison because some vehicles make more efficient use of their length than others, as well as total passenger volume. The prices listed are for the base models and include destination charges but do not include other mandatory fees like tax, title, or licensing.

If that weren’t enough, the Escalade ESV is also available with AWD, capable of towing up to 8,200 pounds, and is packed with luxurious materials, tech, and features.

2. 2024 Jeep Wagoneer L/Grand Wagoneer L

The 2025 Infiniti QX80 is all-new this year, arriving on America’s streets this summer with a fresh new look, a more powerful engine, and a completely redesigned cabin.
